IVSC Founder and Camp Director Vernon Araujo worked as a camp counselor and coach since his Father, Adalio Araujo, started a soccer day camp on St. Thomas in 1998. Vernon also had the opportunity to attend overnight summer camps in Florida and New York as a teenager, experiences which irreversibly changed his life both on and off the field. Island Vibes Summer Camp was created to bring a unique summer experience to the U.S. Virgin Islands so that young athletes may have the opportunity to improve their skills and explore new cultures with Paradise as the backdrop. IVSC aims to help each camper achieve their highest level of athletic ability through healthy competition, sportsmanship and incorporating the philosophy of Olympism.
To provide a positive environment for social and personal development while exposing campers to new cultures, experiences, and possibilities.
The primary Objectives of the camp are to:
- Provide activities primarily focused on exploration and adventure
- Emphasize the importance of team work, community service, and environmental responsibility
- Expose campers to activities rich in Island culture and experiences
- Allow campers to make friends from around the world in a structured, safe, environment
Island Vibes campers have the opportunity to interact with male and female campers from across the United States, U.S. Virgin Islands, neighboring Caribbean islands and countries around the world. Applications will only be accepted for campers that are between 13 and 17 years old by May 15, 2017. Day campers must be 10-12 years old by May 15th to be eligible for camp.
Campers will work closely with the community groups such as Rotary, the VI Olympic Committee and My Brother’s Workshop on chosen community service projects. Community service is not only beneficial for society, but it also has positive psychological and social benefits. Each camper will complete a minimum of five (5) hours of community service during the 3-week program
